Maceo Parker (MD for James Brown] : We performed our regular show at the auditorium and it was videotaped and shown on late night tv. He was so hot at the time that people just said, 'Wow! James Brown's gonna be shown on tv, so we'll just come from the streets and we'll stay home and just watch it.

Isaac Hayes : Those were some weird days. We were standing out in front of Stax, me and Duck Dunn, Wayne Jackson, Al Jackson, Steve Cropper. The Sheriff's deputies pulled up and just started beating people. With sticks! And they were beating white guys as well as black guys. We experienced all of that and we still remained at Stax, as a family. Creative people are the mirrors of society. Stax put out some tunes related to peace and the people coming together. Myself, I couldn't create for a year after Dr. King was killed. Just totally blocked.
