Fact #161810

When:

Short story:

Music business entrepreneur Andrew Lauder signs a deal with Zomba Music in London, England, UK, Europe, to head up their new rock-oriented Silvertone label.

Full article:

Andrew Lauder (MD, Silvertone) : Silvertone wasn't actually formed for the Stone Roses. I'd already been in conversations with the people at Zomba about bringing my rock experience to their label because, although they had a lot of dance and pop success, they wanted to get more into rock. It seemed to me that it was better to do this under the banner of a new label, rather than just as part of the existing Jive Records set up within Zomba, so I came up with the idea of Silvertone and, virtually on the day I signed my deal with Zomba, they told me they had just signed this band that might be ideal for Silvertone, which was the Roses. So I took the demo tape home with me, and really liked it.

I had lunch with Will Birch of The Records on 28 April, and I remember playing the demo for him round at my house. We both thought it was the kind of thing that deserved to be recorded, the kind of music we both loved, whether or not there was a market for it.
