Chris Hillman (bassist, The Byrds) : We got booed in The Byrds. They didn’t even televise the shows then, it was all live radio. But it was a threat to them. The Byrds were ‘a rock band’ even though we were playing real country-type songs. It’s all ok… (laughs) It’s all water downstream now, right? They sure opened up, got a little more liberal. I mean, there are members of the Opry now you’d never even dream!

Roger McGuinn (The Byrds) : There were indeed some folks attending. . . who didn't seem to appreciate how sincere we were in doing country music. You have to remember, it was during the Vietnam War and we were perceived as hippies. But backstage was different. Skeeter Davis took us under her wing, and she was very kind.
