Fact #161402

When:

Short story:

Nirvana and Tad play at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, England, UK, Europe.

Full article:

Rob Challice : I promoted a series of shows at SOAS [The School of Oriental and African Studies] in London with Simon Aldis, who was a member of the Student Union. We booked the Nirvana / Tad double bill from the agent Russell Warby shortly after the release of Bleach. The show happened in November and the crowd went mad as soon as Nirvana hit the stage.

Anton Brooks (publicist) : Nirvana went on first, and it was really interesting because offstage Kurt was such a quiet, placid kind of bloke. Meek, never any problem. Then he went onstage and became this guitar monster.

Jenny Bulley (fan) : I'd read a bit about them [Nirvana] in Mudhoney interviews, this fantastic band from Seattle. It was loud and sweaty and exciting. A mad night. I went and bought Bleach on the strength of that gig. All the loyalties started shifting from Mudhoney to Nirvana.

Rob Challice : As was the way at punk/grunge gigs then we were our own pit security, it was a handful of us and Anton (PR) holding off a mad sea of bodies and limbs. We probably oversold the room which was a 700 capacity going on 1200.

Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) : That was definitely my favourite show, excellent. Very good crowd. I was amazed at it. They were more energetic than a Seattle crowd.

Jenny Bulley (fan) : We were quite surprised when Tad went on last at SOAS. I know this is right because me and my friend were only 18 and we can't remember Tad because we were pissed on cider. But we can remember Nirvana.

Anton Brooks : Both bands played blistering sets that night, with loads of moshing and stage-diving. Pretty much the norm.

Kurt Danielson (Tad) : That was excellent. It was one of the best crowds.

Tad Doyle (Tad) : A bunch of drunk bastards.

Rob Challice : I remember settling with Russell after the show and we had more than doubled guarantee.
