Malcolm Done (journalist) : I don’t think anyone, me included, had any idea how influential what they were doing would become.
It was very hot, jam-packed and a sound so loud it wrapped itself around you. All of them were visibly excited by their own playing, but their guitarist James Hetfield, with a wonderful, growling voice, had the most extraordinary presence. He seemed to dwarf the others but was very easy with the audience. We didn’t know it then, but this was the start of thrash.
