Sting : It was (manager) Miles Copeland’s idea. Part of his plan for global domination.

I remember walking around the streets and being accosted by these snake acts and boys with dancing monkeys, and it frightened the life out of me, but it was so exciting.

We played in this little amphitheatre in the middle of town. It was organised by the jazz club of Bombay, who turned out to be a very genteel group of Parsee ladies in saris who liked jazz. Miles somehow conned them into booking us, so all the local dignitaries bought tickets - the front row was the lord mayor and the fire chief and their wives and daughters.

But then the rest of India got wind of the fact that we were playing and it seemed like the entire sub-continent turned up and stood outside. We didn’t know what to do, so we sound-checked as we normally would, and then there was a riot.

The Police got their bamboo sticks out and started hitting people. We were told to stop sound-checking, and The Police chief, who was also there with his wife and daughters, decided to open the doors and let everyone in.

The place was already stuffed to the gunwhales, and in came this tide of people - the poor, the crippled, the lame, and we had a rock’n’roll show, and it was fantastic. I’ll never forget it.
