Vic Coppersmith-Heaven (producer) : We spent a long time on that. I persevered as much as I possibly could, pushing Paul to try and achieve the best vocal performance. He got a bit frustrated because I kept pushing him to keep singing bits over and over again. I’d mix it so far, then drag him back in and ask him to re-do a bit. He’d be like, ‘Do I have to?’ But once we got all those ingredients right, it was so powerful. I just knew it was going to be a real radio stormer.

Paul Weller (guitar/vocals, The Jam) : Number One? It was fucking unbelievable. But there was that mixture of elation and also being a bit scared. The whole thing of, once you’re number one, where do you go after that? But we were in America at the time, so we cut the tour short. We just said, ‘Fuck this, let’s go home.’ Don’t ask about the apron on Top Of The Pops. Fuck knows what I was doing, mate. That was pre-drugs as well.
