Ken Fechtner (friend of Peter Buck) : Peter is really hyper and has a lot of energy. On the road, he wouldn't sleep for days and he'd get wound really tight. He was given a prescription for some Halcion by a physician. He hadn't taken one yet. We went to see Husker Du in Atlanta in 1986 and when we got home, he couldn't go to sleep so he took one. It didn't tire him enough to go to sleep so he took a second one.
He was still up when I went to sleep but when I got up in the morning, he was asleep on the couch with his neck backwards over the arm of the couch. A lamp was shining six inches from his face. His mouth was wide open and that day's newspaper was neatly shredded into one inch strips and tossed all over my living room.
When he got up I asked him what he did last night and he said he didn't do anything. I said somebody had shredded that newspaper but he had no recollection of it. For some reason he felt the need to shred that newspaper and how he slept that way for eight hours I'll never understand, but apparently some people have amnesia when they take Halcion.
