Fact #159552

When:

Short story:

Foreigner reach No1 in the Billboard Top 40 Singles chart in the USA with the big rock ballad, I Want To Know What Love Is, featuring guest performances by Tom Bailey of Thompson Twins and Jennifer Holliday.

Full article:

Mick Jones (Foreigner) : I had met Tom Bailey before, and we talked about doing something together. Jennifer Holliday was luck. She happened to be in the studio the night we were recording I Want To Know What Love Is. She was a real inspiration for everybody.

Lou Gramm (Foreigner) : We worried that it might do irreparable damage to our rock image.

Mick Jones : That was the one thing I was sort of dubious about - the fact that people might think we’d gone soft or something. I certainly want to retain the rock image. We just put this out because the song was so strong and because it was coming out at Christmas, and it had the right kind of mood.

When we found out we went No1, we really celebrated. This was our first No1 single. People seemed to think we’ve had millions of No1 singles, but we never had. We’d had No1 albums and we had No2 singles.
