When:

Short story:

The Smiths' British tour plays at the University of Swansea, Swansea, Wales, UK, Europe. There are problems among the road crew.

Full article:

Graham Brown (local roadie) : Morrissey refused to go on stage because the flowers in the dressing room weren't fresh enough. I had to race into town and get a fresh bunch of lupins or something. (Source : interview in Live UK magazine, Aug 2010)

Scott Piering : Complaints about (road manager) Cowie from the band and Morrissey were loud and numerous. He had family problems that were playing on him and he was just scrambling to keep it together. He wasn't taking care of Morrissey in the way that they expected. He just underestimated what was needed.

Grant Showbiz (sound engineer) : I didn't respect Phil Cowie at all, and wouldn't do what he wanted. I refused to carry the gear. As far as I was concerned, if I had a good night's sleep, all I had to do was the soundcheck. I wasn't being a good team player. I'm sure there was resentment because, at the end of the night, I'd be swanning around, rolling joints, getting beer and talking to people at the front of the stage.

Johnny Marr (guitarist, The Smiths) : One of the things that was going on all through that tour was the problem with management. We'd lost Joe Moss, and Morrissey and I were looking after everything ourselves. But we were young and the wolves came out to play. Phil Cowie was one of a number of people who made a move to try to become our manager, but Scott Piering of Rough Trade stepped in and helped out in a kind of manager role.
