Paul Weller (guitar/vocals, The Jam) : That was the early days of Thatcherism and the whole country seemed to be getting run down and dissipated. Quite a bleak time, really. We were in direct opposition to all them other bands, the fucking Thompson Twins, all that kind of silk and pearls and satin and all that shite.

That very much made me dig my heels in, if anything, to try and write something that was really going on … Apart from liking the song, I just love that record anyway. There’s something really strong about it – a real call to arms.
