Fact #158550

When:

Short story:

Madonna makes her first British appearance when tv show The Tube broadcasts from The Hacienda, Manchester, England, UK, Europe. The Factory All Stars (including Vini Reilly, New Order's Stephen Morris and Bernard Sumner and ACR's Donald Johnson) perform Shack Up, Confusion and Love Will Tear Us Apart. Morrissey of The Smiths also appears.

Full article:

Tony Wilson (co-owner, the Hacienda) : This was her first tv appearance anywhere outside of America.

Malcolm Gerrie (director, The Tube) : I’d seen her in a New York club and I told (WEA MD) Rob Dickens I’d like to book her, but he said, ‘She’s not a priority. There’s no way I’m paying for her…” So we financed it all and took world rights.

Tony Wilson : She performed Holiday on the dancefloor, not the stage, dead cool, a bit plump. Rob and Hooky went up to her afterwards in the dressing room downstairs and said, “You were really good love, will you do another couple of numbers? Here’s £50.” She went, “Fuck off.”
