Barry Mason (songwriter) : The inspiration came from a woman I was once in love with in Blackpool. I was really very hurt at the time because she'd gone off with someone else.
The title came first, and it's definitely an evocative one. I was looking for a woman's name to use for this song about the great temptresses of history. Jezebel had already been used, so Delilah was the obvious other one that could capture people's imagination.
Les Reed's arrangement stands up through time. I think it's fantastic. It's so good that people even sing the arrangement when it's played. They go 'La La La … Delilah". They all sing the figures that Les wrote.
They now tell me it's the biggest karaoke song of all time, which is quite incredible.
