David Levy (music agent, WME) : In 1997 you had two moments which took electronic music from underground to overground, in a way that meant it could never go backwards. The first of those was the 1997 edition of Tribal Gathering at Luton Hoo where Kraftwerk and Daft Punk played. It made the cover of The Face magazine, and it was the first moment when the entire electronic community came together in a way that the rest of the country had to pay attention to. It wasn’t an illegal rave, wasn’t some dodgy airfield or car park, it was licenced, properly produced, it had major names, and it permeated into the mainstream media in a way that nothing before it had.
And 1997 was also the first ever dance stage at Glastonbury. Massive Attack Soundsystem did the Friday and Megadog did the Saturday and the Sunday, and I had my part to play in that. Up until that moment, Glastonbury had never had a dance tent. Now, it’s impossible to think of any festival that doesn’t have dance music.
