Fact #156294

When:

Short story:

Our House by Madness enters the UK singles chart, where it will peak at No5.

Full article:

Carl Smyth (aka Chas Smash of Madness) : Our House was about my life and family and the trouble in my family. It’s also about feelings. My mother used to annoy the hell out of me, but she was always so important to the whole family. It is a stereotype, but there’s a lot of truth in it. A lot of families, especially Irish ones, are shaped by the mother.

John Kalodner (on why he signed Madness to Geffen Records) : In the fall of 1982, I was over here working with Asia. In fact, I was in the car with Eric Wilson, who was Alan Parsons' manager, and Our House came on the radio and we turned to each other and said, 'That's a hit. That's a hit song.' I mean that's a hit for anybody, for Madness that'll be a hit in America, it'll be a hit anywhere.
