Full article:
Sonny Sassano, 47, a South Elgin mechanic who grew up in Carpentersville, also frequented the area's teen clubs in the '60s. Sassano's favorite haunt? A converted barn, located on Illinois Highway 31, two miles north of Algonquin.
"It was called The New Place. It had black lighting, writing on the walls," Sassano said. "That's where I saw Alice Cooper bite the leg off a chicken on stage."
Attendance at places such as The New Place easily reached 1,000 on weekend nights. Despite that kind of turnout, there were very few disturbances, according to Sassano.
"The crowd was a real mix. Hippies, motorcycle types, straight types and greasers. But believe it or not, there were very few fights," Sassano said. "Course it was the '60s, you know. Love, peace, all that stuff."
