Critical of marijuana smokers and long-haired men, it will become not only one of the most successful but one of the most controversial of Haggard's career. It was said he wrote the song after becoming disheartened by watching hippie anti-Vietnam War protests on tv, but in interviews he was always careful to avoid explaining what the song meant to him.
