When:

Short story:

On his first self-funded visit to the USA, Ed Sheeran attracts the attention of Jaimie Foxx at an open mic night in Foxx's club The Foxxhole.

Full article:

Ed Sheeran : I was going to give up about a year ago. It all kind of imploded and really wasn't going well, so I booked a ticket to LA to do some open mic nights and it all started going well after that.

It showed me a different side because I'd been doing the same acoustic gigs for years and just been dropped by my old management.

I didn't really have anything other to do so I was like, 'Do you know what? I want to try something different' and went to America and saw how they did it, and that kind of gave me another burst of confidence in England.

Ed Sheeran : I went over to LA in April and played some gigs. I played at an open mic night and I was invited on Jamie Foxx’s radio show.

I then played the radio show and then after that he invited me to a party at his house. I ended up spending a week there and using his studio. He was just really friendly and a very family man and he was really kind and he gave me advice on all different elements of the music industry and told me to always stay true to myself.

I had been at his house for a week and then ended up flying home and doing a gig at Woodbridge School. It was a really surreal experience.

Jamie said, 'I have a house with a studio, it was built for people like you, come and stay on my sofa and just make music.' It was really surreal, because I was involved in all these family events, like a cowboy themed birthday party, and he’d be in boots and a cowboy hat and on a horse, and they had Raphael Sadiq as the house band.

I went from a mansion with a massive swimming pool and rooms the size of football pitches to coming home and playing to fifty people at my local school. The two worlds seem so far apart but really they are kind of similar in their family orientations, and the love of music.

Subsequently, as a result of his appearance on the Jamie Foxx show…
Ed Sheeran : I got a call one day saying that a girl who was a junior in the record company has heard your stuff, she sent it up to the head and he'd like to fly you over. It was the best news.
