Fact #151907
When:
Short story:
Ed Sheeran signs a six album deal with Atlantic/Asylum Records at his parents’ home in Framlingham, Sussex, England, UK, Europe. Later in the day, he celebrates with Ben Cook (UK President, Atlantic), Stuart Camp (manager) and Ed Howard (A+R manager, Asylum) over a beer at his local pub, The Station Hotel, Framlingham.
Full article:
Ben Cook (President, Atlantic Records, UK) : I signed him because I had a physical reaction to seeing him play. All I saw was pure, unbridled talent. It was a palpably obvious decision to me.
Ed Sheeran : It’s a very cool thing to be signed, but only because it’s the right major (label). It was the best time to sign a deal because I did it when I didn’t need to do it. It meant the label didn’t call the shots. It’s a symbiotic relationship.
It’s no different to being an independent artist – the only thing is I don’t have to sort things out. I don’t have to ring up magazines anymore. I’m just sitting back, making music and doing gigs – and focussing on being professional.
