Cynthia Weil (songwriter) : When I was starting out as a songwriter, I went to see Don Kirshner of Aldon Music, and he said, 'Yeah, I'd like to put you together with somebody to write … I have this girl, and she writes with her husband, but he's a chemist during the day so he can only write in the evenings, so why don't you write with her during the day?'
So then he brings in this little girl, and we say hello, and she sits down and plays the piano and gives me her address, and it's Carole King. So she was the first person I wrote with at Aldon. We didn't think anything of it, but it was very unusual to put a team of two women together like that.
Although we became really good friends later, as it turned out, her husband Gerry Goffin wasn't too keen on this idea. He was very protective about writing with Carole. They lived in a basement apartment all the way out at the end of the subway line in Brooklyn, so I went out there to write with her, and she gave me this melody. I was still very inexperienced, not that quick on my feet, so I asked if I could take it home, listen to it, think about it.
Well, it took me about two hours to get home on the subway. Just as I got home, the phone was ringing and it was Carole. She says, 'Look, I know this is not a good way to start a writing relationship, but Gerry just came home and he didn't like the idea that I gave you that melody, because he's had a really good idea for it.'
So I said, 'Oh yeah? Well, what is it?'
And Carole says, 'He's come up with this lyric called Take Good Care Of My Baby.' So I had to admit that it wasn't a bad idea.
