Trailblazing female jazz tenor saxophonist Betty Smith dies aged 81 in Baron's Court nursing home in Kirby Muxloe, Leicestershire, England, UK, Europe. Known as "the girl with sax appeal" she led her own Quintet for many years. She also impressed Ella Fitzgerald, played Fly Me To The Moon for astronaut Neil Armstrong and cheered up the famously morose comic actor Tony Hancock.
