Jimi Hendrix : I had friends with me in Harlem. Even in my own section, we would be walking down the street and girls, old ladies, anybody, would say, 'Look at that. What is this, a circus or something?

Arthur Allen (friend) : The black community was very conservative at that time. Jimi was totally different to anyone in the community. He would wear blues hats like the old masters, blues-master hats we used to call them. Then he would put buttons on them to make them his style. He wore pins. My brother and I began wearing bell-bottom pants because of him. Most blacks associated bell-bottom pants with clowns.
