John Giddings (music Agent) : My friend, John Fenton, had become social secretary at the college in St. Albans, and he later became an agent at Sherry / Copeland Agency and worked with Stackridge, Wishbone Ash (who I loved). That made me realise that if you became a social secretary at a university you had a way in to the music business, so I decided to do that.

My A-levels were English, Geography and History, so I looked at the courses and they fitted me for a course in Philosophy and Sociology, and I’m still not sure what either of them are.

I was probably the first person to go to university to get a job in the music industry. It was a good way to get my education paid for three years while I learned a trade. Also at my university there was Ian Flukes, Rod McSween, Mike Watts who went to Transatlantic Records, Dave Wellbeloved who became the guitarist in the John Miles Band. It was a real breeding ground.

One of the best gigs I put on was The Kinks, who were fantastic. I was given the job of operating a spotlight because one of their crew hadn’t turned up. At the end of the first number, Ray Davies said, 'Can you get that spot on me, and just keep it on me?' That was the end of my career in stage lighting.
