Justin Currie of Del Amitri talks to Johnny Black.

Did you have a plan for this album?
Fans often ask why we throw away our best songs on B-sides instead of using them as album tracks or A-sides, and I know exactly what they mean. A certain amount of pressure and pre-meditation goes into A-sides, whereas you tend to relax a bit for the B-sides. So I decided to approach this one like a bunch of B-sides. Just relax and record them fast.

Why should anyone who is not a fan of Del Amitri buy this album?
Most people only hear our singles which tend to be acoustic and melancholy because that’s what we’ve had success with in the past. There’s no acoustic guitars on this album and the mood is generally very up and dynamic, which is more like our live shows.

Your record company biography says Twisted sold a million. Are you rolling in it yet?
A million? No. 400,000 in America, which is great, but I’d doubt a million even worldwide. Record companies exaggerate sales to the media and diminish them to the artist. When we ask what we’ve sold, A+M’ll tell us it’s ten copies. The truth is in between. Besides, even a million won’t make us rich because we’re vastly under-recouped. We’d need to sell two million of the new album before we’ll go into profit.
