Fact #131315

When:

Short story:

On his Nude Tour, Prince plays at Stadio Simonetta Lamberti, Cava de' Tirreni, Italy, Europe. The show is being promoted by the local mafia and, when it does not sell as well as they hope, the Mafia gangsters hold the entire crew and equipment hostage for $100,000.

Full article:

Randy Phillips (promoter, Stiefel Phillips Entertainment) : We sold the date to an Italian promoter who in turn sold the date to the Mafia in Turin. Prince's show didn't sell as well as hoped and, as a result, the local promoter and his cronies held the equipment and crew hostage in the stadium. They demanded we pay them back $100,000 in cash for the release of the gear and crew.

The next date on the tour was being promoted by Marcel Avram. He went to the bank, got the $100,000 and then he and his staff set about cutting every single one of the $100 bank notes in half.

Marcel then went to the stadium and presented the Italians with one half of the cash, literally. He didn't give them the other half of it until the trucks had safely crossed the border back into Germany. Now that takes balls.
