Danny Betesh (promoter) : I remember booking the Beatles for The Three Coins, which we used to run. It was almost like a cellar in Fountain Street.

Even before they broke nationally, that excitement in the north west was special, it really was. I remember people queueing from about 1pm, and the club opened at 6.30pm. The queues went right down Fountain Street to Lewis's.

Brian (manager Brian Epstein) was always terrific to deal with. I booked the first headline tour they ever did in this country with Brian, and we had Roy Orbison and Gerry and the Pacemakers on the bill. You'd be in theatres where the sound wasn't as sophisticated as now, so the screaming would almost drown out the vocals. Perhaps people were better behaved in those days, but you wouldn't get trouble, just screaming and girls fainting.

John Lennon : It was strange suddenly realising that what we ate for breakfast was of importance to people. Mind you, we felt stupid answering things about the sort of girls we liked most … I mean, we liked all of them.
