Jay Black (Jay And The Americans] : I was doing Cara Mia at the Café Wha? in Greenwich Village when I first started singing with the group in 1962. I was getting standing ovations and destroying the place. I remember it by David Whitfield. He did it straight. I cut out the bridge and put in that falsetto thing.
When I auditioned it for Leiber and Stoller, they laughed and said, 'Who are you? Allan Jones?'
United Artists didn't want to know from the song either. Finally, I did it on The Tonight Show in 1965 and though many cards and letters came in praising the song, the company was still sceptical. They put it on the b-side of When It's All Over and the entire nation turned it over.
