A 3,500 capacity venue, The Regal Theater opens at 47th and Grand Boulevard (renamed South Parkway later that year) in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Costing $1.5m to build, it was one of 34 theaters owned by Balaban and Katz. The world's finest black entertainers - including Nat King Cole, Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Lena Horne, Dinah Washington, B.B. King, The Supremes, James Brown, Miles Davis, Sammy Davis Jr., Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie and Duke Ellington would perform here through the years.
