Dave Chapman (MD, ABC-Dunhill Records, UK) : The only artists whose song (The Weight) appeared in the Easy Rider movie who refused to be on the soundtrack album was The Band. So Jay Lasker, the President of ABC found a band called Smith who did a perfectly reasonable cover of The Weight, and put that on the album. Unfortunately, although it meant that when Smith released an album it got a phenomenal ship-out figure, it hardly sold at all once it got to the shops. Most of them came back to us.
