When:
Short story:
Maria Taylor releases her solo debut album, 11:11 on Saddle Creek Records in the USA.
Full article:
Her luminous vocals enhanced Moby’s 18 and now, taken under the wing of Bright Eyes vocalist Conor Oberst, Maria Taylor might finally have achieved a high enough profile to enable her gently dreamy, soaring songs to reach the wider audience they deserve. Everything about 11:11 is understated, from Taylor’s quiet voice to the distant electronic ambiences on which she floats lightly-plucked acoustic guitars, warm strings and chiming keyboards. The effect of all this understatement, of course, is that whenever she departs from wordy verses into melodically simple, pure as rainwater choruses, it’s impossible not to want to sing along. That she makes all of this seem uncontrived means Taylor is much sharper than such languid, lazy music suggests. Even the album’s sole uptempo moment, the chill-out trance groove One For The Shareholder, floats like a dandelion parachute on a warm upcurrent.
