Brinsley Forde (Aswad) : The Nelson Mandela gig at Wembley was one of the highlights of my life. He came to meet all the musicians and he thanked us because he said that, while they were incarcerated they would hear our music and that’s what made the prisoners know that their struggle was being supported in the outside world. Reggae acts had been singing about freedom, and Nelson Mandela and South Africa, and he said that when there was no other way for them to get news and information, it was the music that let them know their voices were being heard.
I think it’s a fact now that music can help to change the world. Music is the international language. You can go anywhere in the world and people may not be able to speak English but they can sing the songs.
