Fact #122683

When:

Short story:

As The Animals prepare to go on stage at Harlem's Apollo Theatre in New York City, USA, to record a live album, The Animals At The Apollo, the US Immigration Department orders cancellation of the shows.

Full article:

Mickie Most (record producer) : The Apollo shows were specifically set up so that I could record a live LP. But as they were preparing to go on stage an official stopped the show.

Apparently our American agents had only got permission for the Ed Sullivan Show. As a result of our breaking a rule by appearing at The Apollo, The Animals almost lost the Sullivan show.

Chas Chandler (bass, The Animals] : We did one live show at The Apollo Theatre. That made us very happy, for we were the first white group ever to appear there. We were supposed to do four shows a day, but ran into union troubles, so the only other work we did was the Ed Sullivan tv show. We only just made that. On the Saturday night, our booking was still not official and then the unions relented. We were supposed to do three rehearsals for the show but, in fact, we did the show without any, on the Sunday.

Ronnie Isley (Isley Brothers) : We were doing a gig at the Apollo. Murray The K had one of his British shows going on at another theatre, The Animals and Tom Jones were there. Well, Jimi was just like everybody else, he wanted to see what those fellows looked like. So he'd get backstage and say hello and then he'd spot a guitar in the corner, maybe a 12-string, and right away he'd be playing it. The English guys would go nuts. They'd say, 'You've got to come to England. Why don't you come with us?' Jimi was dying to go to England. So that was where we split up. We went to Detroit and he went to England.
