Gaz Coombes (Supergrass) : The Happy Mondays were huge at the time. Danny and I were big fans. I remember the bus journey seemed to take forever. The Inspiral Carpets were supporting which was great as we loved them too. 20 to 30 military snare drummers all dressed in matching red uniforms joined them on stage for 'Joe'. It was surreal.

The Happy Mondays were a totally different group live. 'Kinky Afro' was superb, it didn't have that classic 12 string, but it really rocked. It was such a cool experience because the timing was so right. The Happy Mondays spearheaded the Manchester Scene which was the biggest thing in music at the time. Seeing them in their home town was superb. We couldn't get down the front, but it was still pretty smart. Shaun Ryder was a distant figure on the stage with the crowd going completely mental. The sound was perfect despite being a big venue. They played my favourite track 'God's Cop' and 'Step On'.

It was an important time for me because we were in a band at school, playing songs, doing The Smiths and Cure covers.

When Pills, Thrills, and Bellyaches was released it hit me immediately. The Mondays injected a swagger into music and a 'feel good' factor. They had a massive effect.

We left the gig sweaty and hot then had to walk most of the way home. It was exhausting.
