Smokey Robinson : I didn't think that My Girl would become what it has become because I don't think like that. But I got a certificate from ASCAP saying it's a standard now. So, I didn't look at it like that at that time, but I did think it was a good song. And, I did think that it was going to be a hit, because I had a whole plan when I did that. I had been working with The Temptations and I wanted so much to have a smash hit for them. The first hit that I ever really had for them was The Way You Do the Things You Do, on which I used Eddie Kendricks voice for the lead singer.

The Temptations had four or five guys in there who could sing lead, and I knew that David Ruffin was a sleeping giant, man. His voice was just one of those voices that if I ever got the right song for him I felt like it was going to be a big hit. So I wrote My Girl specifically for his voice.

David Ruffin (vocalist) : It wasn't about a lady at all. It was a song about my daughter, about my little girl.
