Alf Bicknell (Beatles chauffeur) : Nobody actually seemed to be the boss when they were recording. It was such a subtle thing. It varied depending on who was singing the song. Neil (Aspinall) and I used to sit there and play chess. When stuff was being laid down, it was great feeling, but you didn't take a great deal of notice when it was happening. It was after, when it was finished, that you listened, and it felt great.
I remember John putting a song down, during the Help! sessions, and he couldn't remember the words. He was terrible for that, couldn't remember words. So he had all the words scribbled out on an envelope and he got me to hold it in front of him while he was singing it. I had to keep turning it round, because he'd written the words all round the edges and everything, and that's how he recorded it. Half way through, I started to shake because I knew George Martin was up there. I just cracked up, couldn't do it. In the end he screwed it up and threw it in the basket.
