Fact #119751

When:

Short story:

On his Coming Home tour, Lionel Richie plays at The Rockhal, Luxembourg, Europe.

Full article:

Olivier Toth (General Manager, Rockhal, Luxembourg) : The Rockhal opened its doors in September 2005, and Lionel Richie was one of the first major shows that we did. That was in 2007, so our collaboration with him goes back quite a way.

Back in 2007 I think we were the only venue on the tour that didn’t have a fully seated set-up. I couldn’t do enough tickets if it was an all-seated arrangement, which meant less than 3,000 tickets. There was some discussion about whether a mainly-standing show would work so I was pleased when people said to me afterwards how much they had enjoyed it because they were able to dance. Lionel’s music makes you want to move, so it was absolutely right. We had about 6,200 people in the room and they danced the whole evening. I was blown away by his show. One woman came and told me she’d been at one of Lionel’s shows a few days earlier in Switzerland where it was all-seated, and it was a much better experience to be able to dance. So now we always do Lionel’s shows in a mixed set-up with about 600 seats.

Production values are very high on his shows, but the main thing about a Lionel Richie show is not the stage set or the lighting - it’s Lionel Richie.

Lionel does everything right in working with the audience. He gives so much back to the fans, he makes them sing and dance and he really enjoys being on the stage. Even people who previously thought they didn’t care for his music are converted by seeing him on stage.
