Chas Chandler (co-manager, Hendrix) : When the album came out and I saw that it was 'produced and directed by Jimi Hendrix', I was pissed off. I was especially surprised to see how much of what I had done was on there, because I know how much more time they spent at the Record Plant after I had walked off the project. In all truth, I had expected to see a much different album.

Robert Smith : Hendrix was the first person I had come across who seemed completely free, and when you're nine or 10, your life is entirely dominated by adults. So he represented this thing that I wanted to be. Hendrix was the first person who made me think it might be good to be a singer and a guitarist - before that I wanted to be a footballer.

"All the tracks are very personal," explained Hendrix. "It's different to what we have ever done before." True. The third Experience offering was a sprawling double set in which Hendrix finally allowed his soul, blues and r'n'b apprenticeships to stand shoulder to shoulder with his revered psychedelic guitar pyrotechnics. Voodoo Chile is the loose-structured Hendrix jam par excellence, while Burning Of The Midnight Lamp is its antithesis, a concise and carefully executed single. His proto-metal re-make of All Along The Watchtower, with its three spine-tingling solos, is so apt that Dylan adapted his own live version to take Jimi's treatment into account. In the catalogue of styles on this album it's easy to pinpoint countless wannabes who have since built platinum careers on solitary aspects of Hendrix's eclectic genius.
