Fact #118172

When:

Short story:

A concert to raise funds for victims of the Asian Tsunami is held at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, Wales, featuring Eric Clapton, Jools Holland, The Manic Street Preachers, Snow Patrol, Keane and Kelly Jones of The Stereophonics.

Full article:

Kelly Jones (The Stereophonics) : I have done a lot of writing in those parts, Sri Lanka and the Maldives, it is a beautiful place with a lot of magic, I was there only last January - it
is shocking how much destruction has occurred, it is important that we do all that we can.

Pablo Janczur (music promoter) : When the South Asian Tsunami struck, stadium general manager Paul Sergeant rang me to say he wanted to organise a gig to raise money, but only had a time window of three weeks.

He said everyone thought he was mad, but I thought it was worth a try. So we hammered the phones until the New Year, leaving messages and using every contact we knew.

By 5 January we had a line-up which included Eric Clapton, Jools Holland, the Manic Street Preachers, Snow Patrol and Keane. We sold 64,000 tickets in a day. It was a true example of people pulling together against the odds and doing something a lot of people thought wasn’t possible.
