When:

Short story:

Blur release a new album, 13, in the UK. The album is produced by William Orbit.

Full article:

William Orbit (producer) : My free-range attitude surprised them. They wanted to knock out good songs, but they also wanted to taste the avant-garde, which could be career death. I saw them panicking at times because they couldn’t work my plan out, and that threw them.

Also, the band dynamics were very harrowing. Damon was going through his break up with Justine Frischmann (of Elastica) at the time. I remember him coming out of the vocal booth after singing No Distance Left To Run and he was crying. I was surprised at how caught up he became in making music.

Graham Coxon (Blur) : We were so chained to melody but he (William Orbit) understood that we wanted to attempt a death-metal techno production. We gave him everything, no matter how ugly, and let him clean up afterwards. I think he liberated us.
