Fact #117626

When:

Short story:

You Sexy Thing by Hot Chocolate enters the UK singles chart where it will peak at No2 during a 12-week run.

Full article:

Errol Brown (singer, Hot Chocolate) : I lived in an apartment in Hampstead (north London) and I was just in there by myself strumming on my guitar and the title came into my head. And I thought, 'Now that's a good title for a song'.

So I wrote it really about the lady I was involved with at the time, who eventually became my wife! It was done in ten minutes really. Most of the hit songs, if they gave me too much trouble I'd drop them. That was the benchmark - whether it was coming out naturally.

Errol Brown : I started writing the song because I wanted to get the word sex in a title without being too obvious, and You Sexy Thing seemed to be a clever way round it. As it turned out, it was a very good title to use and one that has been kind to me. I wrote it for a very special lady who since became my wife over the last twenty years, and I guess it's one of those songs that people remember in lots of situations.

The song seemed to come quite naturally once I'd got the riff and the title, and the rest came fairly easily.

I'm happy it's been so popular, both first time round and recently, although a lot of people think that Hot Chocolate had a No1 hit with it over here (in the UK). It never actually was though. We went in at No6 in the charts, then up to No2 at exactly the same time that Queen came in at No9 with Bohemian Rhapsody which then went straight to the top. They started up there for nine weeks, so there was no way we were going to catch them.

But I don't mind that. I respect the fact that we were second place to such a classic song. However, we did reach No1 in the States in some charts which, of course, was fantastic.

We receive requests quite often for songs to be used in tv and films, which our publisher, Brenda Brooker at Rak Music, always deals with. When a request for its use in this low-budget unknown British film called The Full Monty came in, Brenda stipulated that it could be used so long as it was also used on the closing credits, which is maybe why it had its second chance on the charts.
