Johnny Black (diary entry) : I started out in Trafalgar Square with my friends Andy McGill, Tom Ferguson, John, Roger and others, and we marched to Victoria Park. The sun tried hard to come out, but it was not to be.

On the march, we encountered our good friends Nic, Carol, Guy and Wendy. The first band we saw when got to Victoria Park was X-Ray Spex. Attendance was quoted from the stage as being 68,000, which seemed a bit of an exaggeration to me. We saw The Clash, who didn't make a big impression on me (although the gig has since gone down in history as one of their greatest).

Spent most of the afternoon losing and finding my various friends, and most of the rest of the time trying to locate food. Eventually secured crisps, coke and cheese. Ran into Dave Manning, a guitarist friend from Stamford Hill. Smoked a little weed. Saw Ruts playing off the back of a lorry. Best band of the day for my money, but then I didn't see Tom Robinson Band who lots of my friends reckoned took the honours.

I sloped off after Steel Pulse, because I wasn't really getting into it at all, despite my sympathy with the Anti-Nazi theme of the day. I picked up some Anti-Nazi badges though, which I'll wear proudly. It felt good to know that huge numbers of people care enough about Nazism to be prepared to get into the streets and show solidarity against it.
