Eddy Grant : At that point, the first love of my life was The Equals. I would’ve died for The Equals. I didn’t go out to clubs, I wasn’t a drinker or into drugs or girls. I just wanted to play my music and these guys were my instruments, and they gave substance to everything I thought about.
Then, all of a sudden, I found not everyone was thinking along those lines. I thought the illness would kill me, so I had to come out of the band and hoped the guys would understand and allow me to do the thing I loved the most, which was to make the records. When I’m making music my blood pressure goes down.
Management thought I was surplus to requirements and, although the band thought differently, they basically dropped me because I couldn’t continue in the same way.
