Amalie R. Rothschild (film-maker/photographer) : There was a state of the art sound system, the best in the country at the time. It was the only venue where, for example, the Grateful dead used the in-house system instead of their own. Today, you say that they had an 8-track mixing console and it sounds like nothing, but then, the Fillmore East was the first.

Rock music really became rock theater there. It set the bar and established all of the standards for the sound and presentation of live music at that time.
