Peter Asher (head of A + R, Apple Records) : It was a song Paul had heard at a folk nightclub. Although the couple singing it had written English lyrics, it was really a Russian folk song.

Tony Bramwell (head of Promotions, Apple Records) : People often think Apple was some kind of disaster area, but the record label and the publishing division were remarkably profitable. On the publishing side, Badfinger wrote Without You which was a huge hit for Harry Nilsson and we had Gallagher And Lyle, Dr John … half ofGrapefruit went on to become AC/DC, USA. We even had The Steve Miller Band signed for songwriting. They'd won a talent contest where the prize was a contract with The Beatles new record label, but it didn't exist at that point, so he went to Capitol as a recording artist and we had the publishing.
