Fact #113224

When:

Short story:

The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Vanilla Fudge and Soft Machine play at The Memorial Coliseum, Phoenix, Arizona, USA.

Full article:

Ron Terry (booking agent) : At the hotel, I got a call from (Hendrix co-manager) Michael Jeffery telling me that Jimi didn't want the Fudge on the bill.

Carmen Appice (drummer, Vanilla Fudge) : We'd go on just before him and we used to blow him off stage frequently. I was reading somewhere recently that Hendrix was telling his manager to get him off the tour. That became another problem for us. We would blow bands off and then they wouldn't tour with us.

Ron Terry : I asked Jeffery to let me speak to Hendrix personally. I wanted to try to appeal to his competitive sense. 'Look,' I said,'you're being a pussy about this whole thing. They had a good night, you had a bad night. Just do your thing.' He first told me to go fuck myself but then offered me a warning - 'OK, we'll see what happens tonight.'

That night we were in Phoenix and the Vanilla Fudge's set went over well. Hendrix came out on stage and the fire was coming out of his ears. He was smoking. He showed everybody in the house who Jimi Hendrix was and, as he came off stage, he looked right at me and said, 'That's the way it's supposed to be.'
