Fact #111760
When:
Short story:
Eric Clapton is given a Grundig Cub reel-to-reel tape recorder for Christmas and begins singing into it, accompanied by records.
Full article:
Eric Clapton : I remember getting a little Grundig Cub for Christmas when I was twelve and I'd play records and sing along into the mike, and I got echo somehow. That was the first time I ever envisioned myself doing it (playing guitar). Then I got a guitar and struggled with it, but gradually I began to see it as the main alternative to what I'd been thinking I'd do, which was go to art school and become a designer.
I saw myself as a troubadour. Anonymity. Travelling. The journeyman thing. It was more romantic to me than being a virtuoso. The Lone Ranger mystique. he's here and then he's gone.
(Source : interview with Phil Sutcliffe, Mojo, November 2005)
N.B. Clapton is probably mis-remembering his age in this quote because the Grundig Cub was not marketed until 1959 at the earliest.
