After a performance at the Wide Awake Ballroom, Newark, New Jersey, USA, Solomon Burke becomes convinced that his manager, Kae Williams, is cheating him out of most of his performance fees. After a confrontation, Burke shoots Williams, who gets his revenge by having Burke's Apollo Records contract terminated and having the singer 'blackballed' from the music business, so that he cannot perform live.
