Fact #105959

When:

Short story:

The Searchers enter the UK singles chart with their version of the Jackie De Shannon song When You Walk In The Room.

Full article:

Frank Allen (The Searchers] : It was the first Searchers record I ever played and sang on, soon after joining the group in August 1964. Before that, I had been one of Cliff Bennett's Rebel Rousers, an outfit whose repertoire, coincidentally, The Searchers had plundered to get hold of their best-known hit, a Sonny Bono composition called Needles And Pins. We had already purloined that tune from the original artist, Jackie De Shannon who had flopped with her version. She was not best pleased at having her thunder stolen.

We emphasised the twelve-string guitar and I got to do joint-lead vocal, which was a real thrill for a 'new lad.' This time, however, the act of highway robbery brought a grin to Jackie's face, as she was the writer of the song and therefore just about to come into a large amount of money. She deserved every penny. It's still, in my opinion, the strongest of our hits.
