Alan Cowderoy (fan) : I was playing guitar in a band called Gracious so I was interested in new guitarists. The guitar of choice at that time, for people like Clapton and Beck, was the Gibson Les Paul, with that nice fat sound. They had telecasters and moved on to Gibsons, and nobody wanted to use effects pedals or whammy bars. Then suddenly, that night at The Ram Jam, I was confronted with this guy getting amazing sounds out of a Telecaster. He was also using a lot of effects, which was deeply unfashionable, so he really was changing things around, and he was already fusing blues and psychedelia and rock in his playing. He still looked to me, though, like a guy who'd just come out of a soul revue.

Andrew Lauder (fan) : I'd already seen him once at The Bag O'Nails but word had spread about this guy like wildfire, so I got to The Flamingo early because I knew the place would be rammed. I managed to get about six rows from the front. The whole band looked great - they had that image sorted out right at the start - and the gig was fearsomely loud. I had seen Buddy Guy playing guitar behind his neck and writhing around on the floor, so I knew where a lot of Jimi's showmanship came from, but the playing was still awesome.

John Mayall : I first saw him at The Flamingo, one of the first public shows he did. Before that, he did a few shows in the members-only clubs, Bag O’Nails, The Cromwellian, places like that, which I wasn’t invited to. But within a month or so after he got here, he’d covered all the London clubs that were open to the public. He was a great performer and made me very glad that I wasn’t a guitar player.
