Bobby Freeman : I created the dance in 1962 and I went to Hawaii to do some shows. When I got back, things had changed. This young lady named Judy Mac, who worked at The Galaxie, basically was getting the credit credit for doing my dance that I started doing in my act when I was working North Beach (San Francisco) in 1962. Tom Donahue (head of Autumn Records) said the best way to solve that problem is to do a record. So we brought it to Sly (Sly Stone). Sly wrote the song.

We were friends even before we went in to do The Swim. We lived not that far away from each other. When he moved to San Francisco and got his first apartment, it was maybe twenty-five minutes away from where I was living. On Haight, nice place, between Gough and Laguna.

Carl Scott (Autumn Records executive) : Donahue actually contributed lyrically and Sly musically.
